The evolving science of non-surgical skin tightening is the Holy Grail of plastic surgery and dermatology – literally being able to avoid surgery by using a laser or similar device to tighten skin. Although current technology can tighten skin, it is unable to replicate the result of a facelift or tummy tuck. However, many people either want to avoid a surgical procedure or, for medical reasons, may be unable to have one. Furthermore, the basic premise of a surgical skin tightening procedure, such as a facelift, is to remove extra skin and move old skin to a new location.
The inherent problem is that we lose collagen elasticity as we age and it’s only through the restoration of collagen elasticity that our skin appears healthier and tighter. The analogy we often use is represented below, with the athletic socks. When our skin is young, it is like new socks with great elasticity but, over time, due to forces like sun damage, smoking, hormones, radiation and just getting older, our skin loses its elasticity and begins to sag, like the old socks.
All 4 skin tightening systems we offer result in collagen changes through mild heating, and can be used on the face, neck, breasts, arms, abdomen and legs. Dr. Pozner was recently featured on local news with the Accent device as a method to create breast lift results with a laser. As the skin tightens, the breasts are lifted.
We are pleased to offer 4 skin tightening systems at Sanctuary Medical Aesthetic Center (SMAC) in our Boca Raton office—Accent, Sciton ST, Titan and Aluma. All offer a safe, non-surgical process that uses an infrared light source or radiofrequency device to tighten skin and reverse the signs of aging. All devices heat the collagen and cause skin contracture while protecting the skin. There is no downtime and treatment is not painful for the newest systems. There is an immediate tightening noted and also a delayed tightening that occurs over a few months. Results are noted after 1 procedure but better results are seen by having 2 to 3 treatments spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart. These new devices appear to be more consistent in their tightening than either Thermage or the older tightening systems.
