What is rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic inflammation of the skin. It can occur at any age, but most often occurs after the age of 35. In advanced cases, it can look like adult acne but usually begins as small areas of blotchy redness. It is usually found on the cheeks and nose, but can also appear on the forehead and chin. Rosacea can also create pimple-like bumps on the skin that can ooze and crust over. It can also result in a bulbous nose when left untreated. Many people with rosacea not only experience flare-ups with alcohol and spicy foods, but with stress and heat as well. Rosacea is often rated by grades one to four to indicate its severity, four being the worst.

What causes rosacea?
Although the exact cause of rosacea is unclear, it is a result of chronic inflammation. It is more commonly found in people who are fair-skinned and who blush easily. Rosacea is more common in women than in men.
There is nothing you can do to “prevent” rosacea, and it is not contagious.

How do we treat rosacea?
Our Boca Raton dermatologists, Drs. De Araujo and Schwedelson will carefully evaluate your skin in our aesthetic center and make the best treatment recommendation based on the severity, extent and location of your rosacea. A prescription for oral antibiotics, such as doxycycline, tetracycline or minocycline may be given. We may also recommend topical antibiotic cream such as metronidazole to help control future rosacea eruptions. Other Vitamin-A type medications may also be recommended. It’s important to understand that, even though rosacea can look like acne, it isn’t acne and may not improve with acne medications. Laser treatments may also be recommended, particularly if the rosacea is extensive. Surgical treatment may be suggested if a bulbous nose is a result of your rosacea.

Another option is a topic system like the Obagi Rosaclear System. This three-step kit includes a gentle cleanser, calming moisturizer, and prescription gel containing metronidazole, which has shown at least a one-grade reduction in rosacea after two weeks.

Please call Sanctuary Medical Aesthetic Center to schedule an evaluation of your rosacea. We’re here to help you look-and feel-healthy and beautiful!
