Laser Resurfacing
SMAC physicians utilize the latest in laser technology to treat different types of skin conditions. During your consultation, your provider will evaluate your skin concerns and make recommendations based on the desired outcome, downtime necessary and previous treatment regimens.
In addition to administering laser treatments, we hold basic and advanced seminars where physicians around the world come to learn about each laser technology and the appropriate techniques.
Ablative Laser Treatments
Ablative Laser Resurfacing works by vaporizing layers of the skin to treat:
Acne scars
Scars
Aging Skin
Wrinkles
Sun Damage (photo damage)
There are 3 major types of ablative lasers:
Erbium YAG (Er:YAG) Carbon Dioxide (CO2) YSGG
These lasers differ in the amount of water absorption they have in the skin and in the amount of thermal damage they create. At SMAC we have experience with many types of ablative laser technology and at present are using the Sciton Erbium variable pulse width resurfacing laser. We use this device because we feel that it is the finest resurfacing laser available and provides patients with the best results with the least risk of complications.
Alternatives to ablative laser resurfacing are Chemical Peels, Dermabrasion, non-ablative lasers and fractional laser resurfacing.
How it Works
All lasers work by producing a single wavelength (color) of light that is very intense. Erbium lasers remove varying amounts of the top layers of the skin and cause an interaction that encourage new cells to grow and correct the photodamage, wrinkles and aging skin. Ablative laser resurfacing treats 100% of skin surface area as opposed to fractional lasers that only treat a "fraction" of the skin surface area:
Healing time is dependent upon depth of resurfacing and is tailored to a patients downtime. Deeper laser peels may get the best results but require the most healing. More superficial laser peels heal faster but may require multiple treatments to see significant results. Currently we perform combined light ablative peels and fractionallaser peels for patients with limited downtime. Recovery varies from a day of mild pinkness to healing times of 5 days and 4 weeks of redness.
