Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy
There have been a number of recent publications touting the wonders of Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT). It is important to know and understand the difference between these synthetic drugs and Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy as to not overlook the tremendous benefits these therapies can provide.
The human body was designed to recognize and use three types of estrogen. Estrone (E1), Estradoil (E2), and Estriol (E3). These estrogens have specific purposes and functions within the human body.
The estrogens in Premarin, Prempro, and other similar pharmaceuticals are mainly composed of Equillin, an estrogen native to a horse (the urine of a pregnant mare to be specific). The progesterone component of these synthetic products are called Progestins. Progestins are also not natural and are not recognized by the human body. It is not surprising that a recent research study has strongly linked the use of these synthetic materials to the development of gynecologic cancers in women.
Bioidentical hormones (E1, E2, E3, Progesterone, Testosterone) are derived naturally from yams and or soy and yield hormone molecules that are exact and identical to those that are already in and clearly recognized by our bodies. They represent safe and effective alternatives to synthetic hormone replacement therapy.
The most common reason for women to use BHRT is relief of the symptoms associated with menopause, perimenopause, and PMS, (premenstrual
syndrome) such as hot flashes, mood/anxiety disorders, sleep problems, weight control problems, sexual and libido issues and many others.
You may be surprised to learn of some of the other potential benefits of BHRT. While recent studies have suggested an increased risk in heart disease in women using synthetic hormones (Premarin), other research has suggested a protective effect against heart disease with the use of bioidentical hormones in the proper balance. The use of these hormones can also have beneficial effects on the prevention and reversal of bone loss (Osteoporosis), prevention of memory loss and concentration difficulties, and on the growth, healing and repair of the tissues of the human body.
BHRT can be prescribed by a licensed physician after appropriate evaluation and laboratory testing. It can be administered by the preferred methods of rubbing cream into the skin (transdermal) on a daily basis or implantation of hormone “pellets” under the skin every
3-6 months. It can be administered by swallowing or dissolving tablets under the tongue. Whatever the chosen method, BHRT should only be done under the direct care and supervision of a trained physician.
Bio-Identical Hormone Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between bio-identical hormones and synthetic hormones?
Bioidentical Hormones are exact molecular copies of the hormones that naturally occur in the human body. This is in direct contrast to hormones supplied by the pharmaceutical industry and/or mainstream Gynecologists which are either chemically altered versions of human hormones or animal hormone (i.e. Premarin is horse estrogen). These are termed synthetic and are not naturally occurring in the body. We are designed to recognize and utilize our natural hormones, not those of a horse.
Are bio-identical hormones approved by the FDA approved?
Bio-identical hormones ARE FDA approved. There are a number of bioidentical products available commercially. Unfortunately they are produced with a "one size fits all" mentality which is not conducive to individualized therapy. Compounding pharmacies can provide customized formula for each individual.
What menopausal symptoms can be reversed with bioidentical hormones??ALL menopausal symptoms can be reversed with BHRT. In fact Menopause itself can be completely reversed!
Are they safe?
There is a safety profile for Bio-identical hormones dating back over 70 years. There have been multiple studies demonstrating this. They are safe and effective, and do not carry the significant risks associated with synthetic hormones.
