The Link Between Low Testosterone
and Weight Gain
Obesity is an ever increasing epidemic in this country. Weight management has become a multi-billion dollar industry incorporating dozens of modalities. Unfortunately the overwhelming majority of weight control programs fail to recognize the basic science behind the human body and weight loss.
Weight and fat buildup or breakdowns are controlled by two processes known as Anabolism and Metabolism. Metabolism is the actions that we use internally to break down ingested substances and convert them into fuels for our body. The Thyroid gland is the predominate controller of our metabolism.
Anabolism is essentially the process which directs the utilization of the metabolized products with regards to fat distribution and muscle mass. Conversion of body fat into lean muscle mass is an Anabolic phenomenon.
The Anabolic hormone of the human body (both Men and Women) is Testosterone. It is Testosterone that controls our ability to gain/lose weight, deposit or break down fat, and build healthy muscles. As we age Testosterone levels begin to decline (as early as our 20's or 30's). This decline leads to an accumulation of excess fat typically about the mid section of the body (Abdomen, Buttocks, and Thighs) and a slow breakdown of muscle mass. Increasing the fat to lean muscle mass balance of the body as we age is a harbinger of potential health issues across the spectrum.
There are three major components to weight control in the human body. Diet, Exercise, and hormone level and balance all play key roles in the process. Very few people will achieve long term success with weight control unless all three of these factors are adequately addressed.
If you have been adhering to a healthy diet and exercise routine, but are still struggling to lose weight, consider having your hormone levels evaluated by an age management physician. Click here to reach more about our age management services.
