A Case of ADHD

"So how did you get to me again?" "Well my husband gave me your card after he came back from a business trip; he was sitting next to you on the plane and I guess you both talked about our son Brian and all of his problems. It's just that with all the medications he is on for his asthma and headaches and eczema and anxiety this new diagnosis of ADHD and the new drugs the school wants him on.well, we just don't know. He's only 9 years old and already on so many things that his life is controlled by the drugs he takes. My husband said you can help, but that it won't happen overnight.is there something we can do other than more drugs so he has some semblance of a normal childhood?"

Yes, Brian's medical issues are correctable.his diagnosis is reversible. It's not just bad luck or bad genes that were causing Brian problems..just like it's not just the mercury in the flu vaccine that some parents blame for their children's autism. It's the total toxic load of so many different stresses on his body acting on his distinctive genetic makeup that have revealed themselves in his health problems and altered brain function.

After a complete history and physical were done, we began searching, finding and getting rid of the sources of Brian's systemic stressors; heavy metal toxins, food sensitivities/allergies, and lack of sleep. We identified his missing physiological needs and replaced them. This allowed his body and brain to begin to heal.

He began a colorful nutrient rich whole-food diet. Any meats/ fish were free range without hormones, antibiotics, herbicides or pesticides. He avoided the gluten, citrus, dairy and shellfish shown to be a problem for him. The missing healthy gut bacteria (probiotics) he needed from antibiotic use for earaches were replaced. The tryptophan and vitamin B6 (along with other B vitamins he was missing) were replaced on a daily basis allowing him to make the serotonin neurotransmitter he was low in. We didn't begin to address the heavy metal environmental toxins (lead and mercury in his case) until his gastrointestinal health was restored to healthy functioning, so that he was able to slowly and safely rid his body of them as they were removed from his tissues.

After 5 months of diligent effort by Brian and his family, he no longer met the criteria for ADHD ( ICD-9 code 314.01), his mood and behavior returned to that of a typical engaged in life nine year old and his asthma, eczema, headaches and anxiety were gone (as well as the ICD-9 codes that go with them)..as was the drugs he had been on. Brian did not have a psychiatric disease. His brains' altered functioning was due to nutritional imbalance, heavy metal toxins and dysfunction in his immune and digestive systems. By removing what was vexing his body."taking out the bad stuff" and adding the exact nutrients and other missing ingredients he needed."adding the good stuff", Brian's symptoms were resolved. The caveat here is that all the factors underlying the root causes of Brian's problems had to be addressed. It's not just one thing. As is usual in chronic disease diagnoses, a spectrum of symptoms is usually caused by a variety of avoidable or correctable subclinical, cumulative irritations. We live in a world becoming more toxic every day. We have to do whatever we can to protect ourselves, our children and our loved ones. Functional medicine can show the way.
