Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is an unfortunately common symptom among aging men. It can begin as early as the 3rd decade of life and increases in frequency with each subsequent decade. ED can be defined as difficulty obtaining an erection, difficulty in maintaining erections, pre-mature ejaculation or difficulty in reaching climax, erections not firm enough for penetration, or a complete lack of erectile dysfunction.
ED can be attributed to a number of underlying problems. Hormonal deficiency, circulatory (vascular) disease, neurological problems and pstchological factors can all contribute to ED. Physiological issues account for less than 5 % of all ED. That's right.95% of all ED is due to underlying physical abnormalities. In most cases it is a combination of these factors.
Testosterone decline or deficiency is the most common cause of ED especially in younger men. Decreasing libido, decreasing energy levels, difficulty obtaining and maintaining erections can all be early signs of declining testosterone levels. All men decline in testosterone as they age. To what degree this contributes to or causes ED is variable in each individual and is influenced by other factors noted above. Replacing the deficient testosterone can reverse this. Testosterone replacement using Bioidentical Testosterone Therapy has been used safely and effectively throughout Great Britain, Europe, and in this country for more than 70 years.
Circulatory or vascular disease is another common cause of ED. Erectile function is dependant on adequate blood flow in and out of the penis. Any processes (such as vascular disease) that restrict blood flow can contribute to ED. Heart disease, peripheral. Vascular Disease, Diabetes, and many other medical processes contribute to poor circulation and therefore poor erectile function. In addition many of the medications used to treat these processes can cause or contribute to ED. Chelation therapy is the best (and only) known way to improve blood flow to all parts of the body, including the penis. Drugs such as Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis also work to increase blood flow to the area.
The quickest and most reliable way to alter the blood flow in and out of the penis and obtain and maintain adequate erections is with the use of injections of vaso-active substances. These injections are relatively painless and create -3 hours of firm erections in almost all individuals with very little side effects.
Neurological causes of ED are much less common and are usually seen only in men with a history of pelvic or prostate surgery, traumatic injuries to the pelvis, or long standing uncontrolled medical disease such as diabetes. These are extremely difficult to treat and will usually only respond to injection therapy.
There are many options for treating ED. Some may be successful by treating only one aspect of ED (ie. hormonal, circulatory, etc) while others may need to use combination of treatments to be successful. A thorough review of your situation with the Doctor will yield the appropriate recommendation for treatment.
