Cellulite is a skin alteration often described as an ‘orange peel,’ ‘mattress,’ or ‘dimpling’ appearance on the thighs, buttocks and sometimes lower abdomen of otherwise healthy women. Although some men may get it, most cases of cellulite occur in women. It has been shown that 90% of women go on to develop cellulite at some time during their lifetime. The abnormal fat is believed to be trapped in pockets beneath the skin.
One thing to get straight - cellulite is "normal fat" pressed up against or constructed by the bands of connective tissue which extend from the muscle to the dermal areas of the skin. Gaining weight can make it worse because the deeper fat layer may push up the layer to cause more dimpling. It is the fibrous septae (connective tissue) bands that force the fat against the skin.
To date, there is no definitive cure, because there are any number of factors causing it. Diet and exercise go a long way in helping to prevent cellulite. The mainstays of current treatment involve non-ablative laser therapy for cellulite and injectable lipolysis for fat breakdown. Liposuction may help for large deposits of fat but is usually not helpful for the skin appearance of cellulite. The material used for injection lipolysis is made from a soy-lecithin base. This introduces an enzymatic reaction into the body that breaks down fat cells. The fat is dissolved into liquid and eliminated by the body.
Laser therapy for cellulite has made huge leaps in effectiveness over the last few years. Our favorite device for this at this time is the Alma Accent device. This offers both unipolar and bipolar radiofrequency in a virtually painless procedure to treat loose skin and cellulite. Treatment is performed at 2-4 week intervals for approximately 6 treatments. Occasional maintenance treatments at 3-6 month intervals may be additionally helpful.
