Unwanted Veins
Prominent veins on the face, body or legs are often unsightly and cause patients to seek treatment. The veins can vary in size, color and type, ranging from red dots to larger purple or deeper blue veins. We treat prominent veins differently depending on the areas of the body where they occur.
Facial Veins
Facial veins vary in size from large forehead veins to small red lines next to the nose. Large veins around the eyes may contribute to dark circles. Many prominent veins of the face, as well as flushing, may be a symptom of rosacea, a disease affecting 45 million people worldwide. (Please see our Rosacea page). Treatment involves the use of a laser to coagulate the blood vessels. We at the Sanctuary Medical Aesthetic Center (SMAC) are proud to have the latest in vascular lasers. In fact, we train many doctors around the world in vascular laser treatments. Facial veins are usually treated in 1-2 painless sessions.
Leg Veins
Spider or larger varicose veins of the legs are very common and occur more frequently in women then in men. Approximately 20% of 20-year-old women have abnormal veins on the legs and 50% of 50-year-olds have them. They can cause significant embarrassment and often interfere with the ability to wear bathing suits, shorts or skirts.
The reason people develop abnormal veins on the legs is not fully understood but the known and most important causes include heredity, pregnancy and hormones, and minor injuries.
In order to get the best results from treatment, it is very important to have a proper assessment of the vein systems in the legs to determine whether or not there is any connection between the superficial unwanted veins and the deeper varicose veins. The importance of this is that if there is a connection which is not treated, then there is a high pressure within the flow of blood in the superficial veins and they are likely to recur following treatment. For this reason, combination treatment for leg veins may include injection sclerotherapy of larger veins, endovascular treatment of large veins and laser treatment of smaller veins.
We specialize in the treatment of leg veins and have the facilities to carry out full assessment of the leg vein systems prior to recommending an individual treatment plan.
