Many of my patients ask about heavy metal toxins especially mercury toxicity; “where does it come from, who is at risk, what are the symptoms and how can I get rid of it!” Unfortunately, chronic mercury exposure comes from our air, water, food, occupational exposures and dental fillings. If you’re heavy metal toxic it’s not your fault.

While there may be controversy regarding how much,  people with silver amalgam fillings in their mouth far exceed any estimates of daily absorption from all food sources (including seafood) as well as open air and water sources…and let’s be clear, that “silver filling”  is 50% mercury.  Mercury that all too quickly infiltrates the kidney, the intestinal wall and the brain, causing neurological, psychological and immunological issues. Our nervous system is the most sensitive of any system  in the body to the toxic effects of mercury; from tremors, polyneuropathy (without having diabetes), tingling, slowed mental responses  as well as long term issues up to and including association with personality changes, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s Disease.

The critical part of eliminating the mercury from your body is to remove the offending source; whether that is thrice weekly sushi or decades old mercury amalgam fillings. With removal of the offending source, we are free to rid the body’s burden of this toxic metal with FDA approved chelating agents through capsules, suppositories or intravenous treatments (Chelation Therapy). In the meantime ask your doctor to test you for heavy metal toxins. A urine provoked study with DMSA is the gold standard. Blood tests only show circulating levels (not tissue burden) and hair samples are worthless because hair is essentially a storage depot. It does not show what your true tissue burden is.

If you feel that you may have poisoning and are in need of heavy metal detoxification your first action should be to get tested by your physician. The provocative urine challenge is the best, most accurate test.
