So, you've been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, IBS. You have intermittent recurrent abdominal pain and/or five to eight bowel movements a day, or one difficult movement every four days or bloating after eating a meal . What can you do? Where do you start? Where did it come from? Why you?
As is the case with most chronic complex type medical issues it's never just one thing. The underlying causes; the circumstances, triggers and mediators of disease are different for everyone. With some people it began as food poisoning from a vacation street lunch halfway across the world or at a local fast food restaurant and the resulting use of antibiotics; with others it's food allergies or leaky gut syndrome and chronic high levels of stress. However obtained, the right mix of environment, lifestyle habits, diet and genetic predisposition has presented you with a health challenge. Fix it or live with it. So where do we begin if fixing it is your answer?
There are drugs you can be prescribed to help control symptoms, but they only control symptoms. To stop or reverse the disease process you have to get to the level of cause and mechanism which differs from person to person.
We begin with checking digestion and absorption processes, concurrently looking at intestinal wall permeability, gut microbiota (bacteria, yeast, parasites etc.) immune system status, levels of inflammation and the nervous system.
What this means to you is the following. We replace any necessary digestive enzymes that are in short supply; pancreatic enzymes and betaine Hcl when needed. We repair the gut barrier with anti-inflammatory medical foods as daily shakes, (IBS is characterized by an increase in proinflammatory biochemicals ).We re-inoculate the gut with critical probiotic bacteria lost through use of antibiotics, steroids, motrin type drugs or stress and support their growth with prebiotics. As an aside, chronic stress can wipe out your good gut bacteria and promote the growth of some pathogenic bugs.Pseudomonas and E.Coli to name a couple of the most common, so stress reduction is important. We check for immunoglobulin food sensitivities and through elimination dieting have you avoid the offenders. If there are fungal causes of your bloating we have a choice of botanicals or antifungal medication to remove them.
In a nutshell, treatment is directed towards an integrative 5R program.
Remove parasites or any pathogenic bacteria, fungi or offending foods.
Replace digestive enzymes when necessary.
Reinoculate gut flora with needed probiotic bacteria.
Repair gut lining to normal levels of permeability.
Rebalance your life with stress reduction techniques from relaxing massages to new exercise routines or meditation. Patient outcomes (in this case resolved IBS) improve, by applying the above nutritional and lifestyle interventions.
Of course, every patient is different and will require an individual consultation to determine a plan of treatment. If you would like to learn how Dr. Blyweiss can help you with IBS. Click here to schedule an introductory consultation or call at 1-800-407-4319.
